INTRODUCTION
Literally perched on the roof of
West Bengal at an altitude of 2134 m (7000 feet), &
in the shadow majestic Mount Kanchenjanga, this
delightful hill station surrounded by verdant hills is
a tourist's delight Darjeeling was developed into a
resort by the British, tea plantations were introduced
in the 1840s in the area around it.
Darjeeling presents a starting
contrast to the visitor from the plants. The houses
cling precariously to rides, seemingly in constant
danger to sliding down the verdant slopes, Exotic
Tibetan bazaars down narrow cobbled ways reveal
unexpected treasures, and the scenery is enchanting.
This is Trekker's country, but the toy train is an
extra special delight.
Tigger Hill, Ghoom Monastery,
Batasia Loop, Darjeeling, Rangeet Valley Passenger
ropeway, Tibetan Reguagee Self Help Centre, Lebong Race
Course, Happy Valley Tea Estate, Dhirdham Temple and
the Museum should not be missed.
