INTRODUCTION

Nesting is a wide and thickly wooded valley of the Shivalik ranges, Dehradun is one of the most beautiful resorts in the submountain tracts of India, known for its salubrious climate and scenic surroundings. Doon, asides often called has been a favourite settling back to many millennia. The name Dehradun appears to be a collection of two words, each spaced inantiquity from the Guru of the pandavas and kaurava of the Mahabharat and the illustrious son of goddess Ganga, set up an ashram here, near the village of Dwara to perform his devotions at a lonely spot. The place came to be know as Dron Ashram, which eventually became Dun.

Earliest tangible evidence of the history of Dehradun is glimpsed from a rock in scription of Emperor Ashok, 3rd century, BC, that was discovered in 1860 AD by a Britisher, Mr. Forrest, near Kalsi. The region then formed part of the Emperor's domain, after disappearing from history, perhaps, because it was deserted, it re-emerges in the territory of the Katyuri dynasty of Garhwal. Dehradun has now become an important tourist destination, too to rits-surroundings offer much to interest a visitor.

PLACES OF TOURIST INTEREST

Nature is one of the biggest lure of Dehradun; a wide valley nestling on the wooded slopes of the Shivalik range, profusion of colours as the flowers bloom in its smiling climate all the year round, mountain stream gurgling though in gorges and open glades; the northern edge of the valley backed by the massive ridge where on the crest , lies the summer resort of Mussoorie, undulating plans dotted with villages and fields verdant with repening command vegetable produce and fragant with luscious fruit.

To enjoy nature at its best one needs only to move away from the croweded bazars & streets.

FOREST RESEARCH INSTITUTE

One of the finest institutions in the world on the science of forestry. FRI, as it is called usually, stands on extensive grounds with the Mussoorie ridge backgroup.


TAPKESHWAR TEMPLE

6 Km. the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the paramount deity of the mountain-folk, and is the most important temple here. The temple is by the side of a seasonal stream with water falling drop by from the top of a rock on the lingam. A huge fair is organised every year on Maha Shiva rock on the lingam. TAPOVAN

6 Km. Associated with Lakshman, younger brother of Lord Rama, who did penance here to atone for the sin of helping to kill Ravana, Brahman King of Lanka.


PRAKASESHWAR MAHADEV MANDIR

10 Km. from Dehradun lies Shiv Temple Called Prakasheshwar Mahadev on road to Mussoorie is the right Point to stop while going to Mussoorie. Thousands of devotees visit this temple every day.


SAHASTRADHARA

14 Km. A very picturesque place of exceptional natural beauty, it is also known for its cold sulphur spring bath for tourists have been provided for those desiring privacy.
