INTRODUCTION
Nanital district is aptly called the
"Lake District" of India. Nanital, one of
the three largest lakes here, is also known as
"Tri-Rishi Sarovar" and resembles silvery
disch held in cupped. The presiding deity here is
the goddess "Naina Devi" who is much
revered by the hill and from whom the place derives
its name.
According to one legend, the lake was
created by the rishis Atri, Pulastya and Pulaha
from the waters of the sacred Mansarovar lake. It
is thus often, referred to as the smaller
Mansarovar.
Today Nanital has developed into one of
the most popular resorts, far beyond the summer
retreat the British settlers has originally
planned. It has the advantages of year round
activities to suit the diverse tastes of a wide
range of tourists.
Nanital has a number of attractive places
like Lake-Tour in which you can enjoy a number of
lakes called Bhimtal, Sat-Tal, Naukulhi Tal and
other, the spot of scenic beauty of Kumaon, Called
, Ranikhet, Almora & Kausani are also connect
by buses run daily by local travel agents &
tour operator. They may take half at Kausani.
PLACE
OF TOURIST INTEREST
The Mall forms a popular promenade to
which people go through in the evening. The hills
surrounding the lake from popular excursions for
day-long picnics of these, Naina Peak 6 Km., is the
highest and one can reach by an easy trek. Snow
view 2.5 Km. is the most popular peak, which is
also accessible by a rope way carriage from the
Mall.
HANUMAN
GARHI
3 Km. A religious centre (1951
mt) built
by a famous saint, Neem Karauli Baba, is dedicated
to Hanuman, and contains a 12 feet tall image of
the deity.
STATE ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATORY
4.5 Km.
situated on top of a ridge (1951 mt) the observatory is open to public
in the evening on fixed date.
KILLBURY
10 Km. part
of the reserve forest range. It is known for its varied flora and
fauna.
KHURPA TAL
10 Km. One
of the smaller lakes around Nanital and farourite haunt for anglers and
picnickers. It can also the reached by a 6 Km trek along a gently
ascending jungle track.
BHIM TAL
20 Km. from
Nanital is the most picturesque lake for the tourist. It has an island
in this lake which serves as a restaurant and picnic place for the
tourist.
