INTRODUCTION

Chandigarh, union territory and capital of two states Haryana and Punjab is India's most modern and well planned city, laid by Le Corbusier. Chandigarh pays homage to independent India's open mind that could conceive a dramatically different plan for a new city and see it through to fruition. The result is a capital that is an architect's leisure activities, is just a stepping stone to the attractions of the hills that lie beyond, in Himachal Pradesh.

For the visitors the city is beautifully located. The most attracting is Sukhna lake, a halting place, Rock Garden. Chandigarh is a very green city with a large variety of flowering trees.


PLACE OF TOURIST INTEREST

THE ROCK GARDEN

The Rock Garden, Sector-1, has been built largely out of city garbage, and is unique to the city, an absolute must for every visitor. The Museum and Art Gallery, sector-10, houses a collection of paintings and sculptures, and is closed on Mondays.


THE CAPITAL COMPLEX

The capital Complex, Sector-1, located at the northern end of Chandigarh, near the Shiwalik foothills, is the administrative hub for two states, Haryana and Punjab. The High Court, legislative Assembly, secretariat, Open-Hand Monument, Geometric Hill and Tower of Shadows are examples of Le Corbusier's genius and are part of the Capital Complex.

 

THE ROSE GARDEN

The Rose Garden, Sector-16, comprises of 30 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens containing nearly 1,600 varieties roses.


SUKHNA LAKE

Sukhna Lake, Sector-1, offers sports like boating, yachting, water sking, and has a cafeteria.


YADVINDRA GARDENS

Yadvindra Gardens at Pinjore, 24 km. away, are on the road to Shimla, NH-22. These 17th century gardens, designed by Nawab Fidai Khan, who was architect to the Mughal Emperor, Aurangzeb, area pleasant blend of Mughal and Rajasthani style. Next to Pinjore also on NH-22, is the Bhima Devi temple.


GETTING THERE

By Air: Chandigarh is well connected by air. The airport is 11 Km. from down town.

Indian Airlines connects Chandigarh with Delhi (40 minutes), Srinagar (2 hours), Jammu (1.5 hours) and Leh(1 hour). Indian Airlines city office, Sector-17, Ph. : 40539, 26443, Airport Flight Enquiry Ph. : 43304.

Indian Airlines links Delhi and Kullu with Chandigarh and with Dharamsala and Shimla. It also has services to Ludhiana. Vayudoot's handling agents are Shivalik Travellers, Mini hall, Hotel Piccadily, Sector 22-B Ph. : 44996, 4492, 32223-7. Airport Office Ph. : 43304, 23001/2 extension 462.

 

By Rail: Chandigarh is well connected by Shatabdi Express trains with its principal gateway city. Delhi and with other cities on an extensive network. The city booking office is at ISBT, Sector-17, Ph. : 32696. The Railway Station is 8 Km. from down town Chandigarh. CTU runs buses to and from the railway station, coinciding with the arrival and departure of trains.

By Road : Chandigarh is best connected by road and buses are an important link.
