INTRODUCTION
Siliguri is the gateway to north
eastern India's many splendoured. A small and bustling
commercial settlement, Siliguri itself is unperposing,
its beauty being best highlighted by a drive in the
neighbourhood through tea plantations manicured a
pristine green.
Beyond Siliguri a world of
enchantment awaits the traveler, Darjeeling, the queen
of hill stations famous for its tea, is celebrated as a
holiday resort in the Himalayas, with fantastic views
and picturesque sight seeing Kalimpong is a companion
hill resort with quaint colonial cottages, an air of
leisure and relaxation and a cheese industry. Beyond
both is Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, a wonderland of
monasteries, beautiful walks, cheerful flora and
orchids, best displayed during its annual International
Flower Festival. The state also provides trekking in
the Himalayas. Yet another hill resort in the region is
Mirik, a picturesque settlement that has the additional
attraction of being new.
This gateway to the region along
with Guwahati provides access to the complete north
east.
