INTRODUCTION
Chennai, is a journey into
timeless India, a Kaleidoscope of moods, Rich in the
treasures of history, from temples and shrines to forts
and palace, the landscape of the past lives easily with
the present. Chennai is the fourth largest city in
India and the capital of Tamil Nadu. Retaining much of
its traditional charm, this 350 year old city is the
gateway to the south, providing many a fascinating
vignette of southern heritage.
Among the places to visit here is
Fort St. George, where most of Chennai history was
written. The buildings in the Fort, today, house the
Secretariat and the Legislative Assembly. The St.
Mary's Church witing its wall was concerned in 1680 AD
and is believed to be the oldest Anglican Church in the
east. Another beautiful church, the San Thome
Cathedral, is said to be the last resting place of St.
Thomas the Apostle who brought Christianity to India
inn 52 AD. The National Art Gallery contains a splendid
collection of Chola bronzes. Of architectural interest
is the Kapaleswarar Temple with its massive and
intricately carved gorpuram towering into the sky. The
Parthasarathy Temple is another splendid 8th century
shrine dedicated to Lord Krishna. And then there are
the beaches - Marina, which is also the city's
sea-front and the fine Elliot's Beach. The Kalakshetra,
founded by the late Rukmini Devi Arundale, is a
renowned institution at keeps alive the traditions of
Bharat Natyam and Carnatic music. Of interest to nature
lovers and the Deer Park and the Snake Park at Guindy.

A month-long extravaganza from mid
December to mid January.
NAVARATRI
A 9-day celebration, October. All
over the state. Music concerts and dance performance
are part of the festivities. Houses are decorated with
a display of dolls, images of gods and toys.
